Books about Mining and the Old West

George Dunkin after his arrest in 1952.I am currently hard at work on my latest project, which is entitled "Paying The Price for Oregon Gold Dust". This new book features the stories of many early Oregon gold miners who found themselves paying the ultimate price for their golden quest. Included are the stories of Henry Wines, often called "The Meanest Miner in Oregon", the sudden disappearance of Gus Lindholm who vanished without a trace in South West Oregon, the hanging of William Kane who shot and killed his employer for paying him in paper money, of Ed Scheffelein who twice discovered and then ultimately lost a bonanza, the tale of miner George Dunkin who led the State of Oregon on an 8 month backwoods manhunt in the early 1950's and many others.

If all goes according to schedule, "Paying The Price For Oregon Gold Dust" should be available by Fall of 2010 and will be available not only through the typical online dealers, but also through mining shops and wherever historical books are sold throughout the State of Oregon. In addition to the usual donations to historical libraries, it is my intention that the profits generated from this work go to the legal funds of the South West Oregon Mining Association. More info coming soon.

"
"Ghost Towns: Yesterday & Today" is an excellent work on many well known ghost towns around the United States by Gary B. Speck. Of particular interest are the photos and descriptions of many ghost towns which are not located in the Far West. You don't often hear about those places. Speck is a well known authority on ghost towns, so it was a real pleasure to be approached by West Side Publishing who wanted to include my photos of Golden, Oregon in Gary's book. This beautiful book is well written and lavishly illustrated. Available from Amazon.com for $19.95 or wherever fine books are sold.
